GREAT AIR RACE
| ROSS-SMITH ON LAST STAGE. i GREAT RECEPTION EN ROUTE. ENCOURAGED BY SOUTHERN CROSS. (United Press Association.) Received December 8, 7.25 p.m. ' SYDNEY, Dec. 8. A Sun cable received from Captain Ross-Smith, dated Singapore, sth, says: "I am working 1 on the machine preparing for the last stage. I have discarded most of our kit and some spares, taking only necessities. Practically the whole population here have visited the machine." Cabling on the Gth, early in the morning, he says, "We saw the Southern Cross and regarded it as a good omen. We left at 7, a large crowd seeing us off from the small racecourse. The machine lifted splendidly, and after circling the city we proceeded south along the coast of Sumatra. The country was all dense jungle. The passage was very bumpy and some rain fell. We passed over thousands of isles to Tangcrang, thence past Batavia, and arrived at Kalidgate at 4 o'clock. We had an enthusiastic welcome and reception by the GovernorGeneral. Flying officers presented us with laurel wreaths. We hope to reach Sourabaya to-mqrrow."
