MATAMATA. Personal. Mr .F. Price, who was indisposed for over a week, is now about again, and was in attendance at the Town Board meeting on Monday evening. There was a large assemblage at the Matamata railway station last Saturday to welcome home verious district soldiers. Among those to arrive were Bob. Mateer, Willie Morrow, J. Stanley and —. Kneebone (llinuera). At the annual meeting of householders on Monday evening the chairman, Mr J. Pohlen, referred to the fact that Mr S. Gunn did not intend U)' seek re-election to the committee. He said that Mr Gunn had served on the committee as chairman or secretary for a matter of 12 or 15 years, and during that time had always been one of the hardest voluntary workers. He had the greatest pleasure in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to him. The motion was carried by acclamation, and it was decided to record it in the minutes. Winter Prospects. Indications at present point to a shortage of winter feed, and farmers seem little, inclined to load themselves with stock. Consequently values show no prospect of rising immediately. Deer Stalkers. A party of .Matamata sportsmen— Messrs Holmes (2). W. and H. Hardinf, and W. W. Livingstone, have returned from a visit to the Wairarapa, where they had been on a deer-stalk-ing expedition. They report excellent sport, some good heads having been obtained. One of these was a 13pointer. The Court. For changing his place of abode from North Auckland to Peria, Ivan Martaine, an alien, was fined £2 and costs at the Magistrate's Court last Wednesday. Pahi Pomare, for disorderly conduct at Putaruru, was fined £1 with costs. He was fine £2 for damaging the constable's gold watch chain. TANIWHA. Sport. A football match in aid of the Taniwha Peace Commemoration Hall, between teams from Taniwha and Wairenga resulted in a win for Taniwha by G points to 3. The outstanding player was G. Burrett. A challenge was received from Ohinewai to play a match at Wiircngu on May W)th. . Schools. The result of the election was as follows: Messrs Carley (chairman), G. Elliott (secretary), W. B. Carter, J. Keith, S. Hamilton. A dance was held at Okarue on \ the 28th, to open the new school. Road Board. Great interest is being taken in the coming, election. The following arc the candidates for the three seats:— Messrs J. Keith, R. Storey, G. Elliott, C. Sampson, G. McEvoy. Returned Soldiers. Private T. Loftus has arrived home bringing his bride, and all join ir wishing him and his wife every success for the future.
