HOROTIU. Freezing Works. Operations at the works are proceeding much as usual, but during the last few days there has been an increase in the number of bullocks slaughtered, the daily total now reaching about 160 head. The past fortnight shows a slight falling off in the number of sheep and lambs offering, and consequently the day's kill has not reached the total of preceding periods. However, cattle are offering in extra large lots, and the expectation is that this will continue to be the case for some time to come. The freezing space is now becoming a little congested and the hope is entertained that a boat will shortly be in port, and thus a large number of the frozen carcases will be removed from the works.
In addition to the large quantity of meat, the chambers also contain about 18,500 boxes of butter and 3000 crates of cheese. It is expected that the cheese will soon be removed to the freezing chambers at Auckland. Telephone Communication. In the course of conversation with Mr Robertson, manager of the local works, your correspondent learned that the telephone will shortly be connected with the Horotiu railway station, and the manager's residence will also be linked up. This is regarded as an important move, as the works during office hours can be notified of any stock arriving by rail, and during the evening like information can be given to the manager at his home. The New School. On Wednesday morning Mr J. Farrell, architect to the Auckland Education Board, met the members of the Horotiu School Committee to discuss matters of importance and interest fn connection with the new school now in course of erection. The new building will not be ready for occupation for about six weeks. Progressive Euchre. Now that the long evenings are approaching it is proposed to hold a series of euchre parties and dances. This is a popular form of amusement, and it is to be hoped the residents will give their support.
