ANTI-SHOUTING LAW
SALUTARY FINES. WHANGAKEI, Tuesday. Heavy fines were imposed by Mr E. W. Burton, S.M., to-day upon defendants charged under the anti-treating regulations with offences at the Kamo Hotel, on February 24. The principal witness was Constable Meiklejohn, of Auckland, and in his judgment, the magistrate said that witness's evidence proved the offences. The licensee of the hotel, Ferdinand Felix, was ordered to pay fines amounting to £75, with costs, in respect of two breaches of the regulations. Thomas McGrevy, for shouting, and William Lilley, Ellis Dyer, and Everard Lambert, for consuming liquor for which McGrevy paid, were each fined £3O and costs. The defendant, Lilley, said he was 90 years old. Lambert was also convicted of shouting for Dyer, and the latter of accepting; both defendants were ordered to pay costs and expenses. Charges in respect of the Whangarei Hotel, in which Leonard S. Irving was charged with shouting, Christopher Irvine with accepting, and William Simmons with supplying, on February 23, were dismissed.
