NOT A DESERTER. PRISONER OP THE ENEMY. AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, Friday. In connection with the reported desertion to the enemy of a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, it is now officially stated- that there has not been a case of desertion at all. The man in question is Private P. Nimot, of Carterton, who is officially reported to be a prisoner of war along with five other New Zealanders, at Duloup, Westphalia, Germany. In view of these circumstances, the Minister for Defence has cabled Home ordering a thorough investigation and report. INFERNAL MACHINES IN CARGO. SEVEN ALLIED SHIPS BLOWN UP. Received Sept. 1, 8.10 p.m. COPENHAGEN, Sept. 1. The Dagens Nyheder states that Austrian infernal machines placed in cargoes blew up seven allied steamers in a Finnish harbour last week. To-night's German communique, the first signed by General Lindeudorff admits that yesterday we lost a salient jutting towards Martinpuich.
