AUSTRALIA AND CONSCRIPTION
SECRET SESSION. REFERENDUM IN EIGHT WEEKS. MELBOURNE, Sept. 1. A secret session discussed the war and matters that will arise after the war. Mr Hughes' statement with regard to recruiting was not referred to. Mr Hughes lias announced that the referendum on the question of conscription will be taken in about eight weeks' time. He proposes to visit the various State capitals and explain the reasons for his proposals to the labour organisations and enlist their support. Returns prepared by the Commonwealth Statistician show that 452,618 men in Australia who are eligible for military service have not enlisted. Of that number 152,910 are single men. A congress of the trades unions is to be held in each State before the end of September. Senator Pearce (Minister of Defence) says that 32,500 men must enlist in September, or a proclamation will be issued at the beginning of October.
