THE UNITED BOROUGH
NO WARDS. SUGGESTED EARLY AMALGAMATION. A letter from Mr G. P. Newton, Assistant Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs, informed the Hamilton Borough Council last night that it was proposed to advise His Excellency the Governor to effect the union of the two boroughs of Hamilton and Frankton as from April next, the united borough to -be an undivided one (that is, without wards), the number of members to be 12, exclusive of the Mayor. In connection therewith he requested the Council to consult with the Frankton Borough Council and recommend the name of a suitable person for' appointment as town clerk and returning officer temporarily. Between the date of the union and the next biennial election of councillors the Council of the united borough will consist of the mayors and councillors of the two existing boroughs. A conference will be held with the Frankton Council at an early date to discuss matters generally affecting amalgamation. Cr. Watts suggested the advisableness of asking the Minister to bring the amalgamation into effect at an earlier date than April next. This matter will be discussed at the conference, along with the question of joint and separate loans.
