AUSTRALIA AND COMPULSION
A PITIFUL COMPROMISE. MELBOURNE, August 31. During nis conscription statement Mr Hughes said that under the present system the stream of recruits, had fallen to less than a third of what was necessary. A secret session of both Houses will be held to-day to discuss private war communications from the Imperial Government. Great disappointment is expressed in Liberal circles at Mr Hughes' announcement, Senator Millen, ex-Minis-ter for Defence, denouncing it as a pitiful compromise. The Sydney Daily Telegraph, commenting on Mr Hughes' statement, says that it represents a painfully apparent attempt by Mr Hughes to act up to his speeches in England, while keeping the Government, as far as possible, under the heel of the Political Labour League.
