OPERATIONS HAMPERED BY WET WEATHER
BRITISH MAKE PROGRESS NEAR MARTINPUICH. ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED BY BRITISH AND FRENCH. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, August 31. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "Wo gained ground southward of MartLnpuich. We frustrated attempts to attack at Guillemont and raided trendies at Neuville St. Yaast. Tlie weather is hail on the' Western front, and little is doing." A German communique states: "The enemy last night attacked (Killers, Pozieres, between Cuilleinont and Maurep.is, and south of the Soinme. They prepared storm attacks, but were held down in the trenches. We repulsed The English north of Drillers and Pozieres." (High Commissioner's Cable.) LONDON, i) a.m. Thursday. French official: "The Germans attempted a coup-de-main at Parloy Forest, where they penetrated a portion of our trenches, but were immediately driven out by a counter-attack."
