PERSONAL.
The Hon. W. H. Hemes, Minister of Railways, arrived in Hamilton today from Te Aioha, and will 1 eave again by the Main Trunk express for Wellington, While in Hamilton he was waited upon by a deputation, representing the Hamilton Borough Council and Cnamber of Commerce, in reference to the Victoria street and River Road crossings.
An example that should shame the many who have not yet offered their services to the Empire ,has been set by Messrs Darby, McKenzie and Broad, who, invalided home some months ago, have now re-enlisted, and left Hamilton to-day with a special contingent. Last night they were entertained at the Soldiers' Club, where each was presented with a pocket wallet. Sergeant-Major Purdom, who presided, congratulated the three men upon again offering their services. There wevo, he said still a large number of eligible men in and around Waikato who had not even submitted to the medical test ,and to these the guests that evening stood out in marked contrast of principles and character. The example of Messrs Darby, Broad and .McKenzie should prove an incentive to those who had not yet made up their minds as to whether the Empire needed them or not. They had already experienced the triaK of the battlefield, and now, from a doubly strong sense of duty, they were again going to face the foe. On behalf of the returned soldiers of Hamilton the Sergeant-Major thanked the three men. and assured them that thev would he remembered by the comrades they left behind, and would be welcomed by members of the club on their return.
