How far the police are to come into the case of any Reservist depends on the man himself. If he takes the trouble to read the advertisement in this issue or a poster, or if he calls at a postoffice, he will learn how to avoid any embarrassing or worrying attentions from the police. Constables arc authorised to question a Reservist on the subject of enrolment, and they have power to detain a man if they are not satisfied with his replies. Every Reservist should make prompt application for a certificate of enrolment which satisfies the police. This document also acts as a passport to employment. A somewhat anomalous situation,

showing the almost absurd length to which British justice and tolerance are carried, arose last week at the Hamilton Court, where the Magistrate was engaged for many hours listening to rival claims of a number of Austrians. While the case was being heard, and the whole services of the Magistrate and Court officials were to a large extent being utilised by these alien enemies, the strains . of martial -music were heard, and shortly there passed the Courthouse the twentieth reinforcement draft en route for camp and eventually to fight the countrymen of the very litigants who were receiving not merely the protection of this country. but the benefits of the paid services of the Court functionaries. And thus doth Britain wage war.

, A special sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Cambridge on Friday when Mr Rawson, S.M., re-heard the case of the Matamata County Council (Mr Lewis) v. IL_ Manuel and J. Endean (Mr Walsh).
