GERMANY AND PEACE
STATEMENT BY UNDER-SECRETARY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS. NO OVERTURES OF ANY KIM: MADE. BRITISH RELATIONS WITH GREECE THOROUGHLY SATISFACTORY. PROPOSED AMERICAN PEACE ENVOY TO EUROPE. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received August 24, 8.5 p.m. LONDON, August 25. In the House of Commons, Lord Robert Cecil, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated definitely that no peace overtures of any kind had been made to Britain. There was only one way of making overtures, namely, by a communication from the enemy Government to the British Government. If such occurred the first thing to be done would be to consult our Allies. Asked whether any indirect overtures had been received, Lord Robcrl replied, 'At no lime," adding Ihal it was inadvisable to go further into that question now. Speaking of our relations with the c.reek Government, he said that as far as he knew they were thoroughly satisfactory, hut we were coping with a knotty problem. (United Service.) The Evening Standard states that it is rumoured among officials that President Wilson will shortly send a peace envoy to Europe, in the hope of gaining the German vote at the Presidential election. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received August 24, 8.50 p.m. AMSTERDAM, August 24. Tin 1 German bishops who are meeting in conference sent a message to the Kaiser praying the Emperor and people to bold out. The Kaiser replied: "God's justice, will give victory to the Germans, who are fighting for liberty and existence."
