THERMOPYLAE RECALLED
HEROIC RESISTANCE OF THE GREEKS—FIGHT TO THE LAST MAN. EVENR INCH OP GROUND HOTLY CONTESTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, August 23. A Rome message states that the Bulgarian Minister at Athens threatens to leave owing to anti-Bulgarian demonstrations. Received August 24, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, August 24. The Daily Chronicle's Athens correspondent says the heroic struggle of the Greeks in resisting the Bulgars at Pheapetra and elsewhere has stirred the country's imagination. Colonel Christoddulos, the commandant at Seres, says that the Pheapetra garrison disputed every inch of ground. Their fate is unknown, but he believes the fight was kept up till the last man fell dead. Out of the Starcista garrison only two wounded Greeks were left at the conclusion of the combat. ■■* > * '
Colonel Christodoulos enthusiastically declares that there still remain Greeks worthy to be companions of Leqnidas, and soldiers knowing how to die to save the honour of Greece. Pheapetra will perhaps some day figure in history like Thermopylae. Colonel Christodoulos states that he is prepared to defend Seres to the last.
It is reported that the defenders of Kilkich suffered heavily from vastly superior Bulgarians. The Greek losses at Demirhissar are unknown, but it is feared the Greeks have been isolated after a glorious resistance.
