THE MUNITION PROBLEM
KITCHENER'S REASSURANCE. EFFECTIVE 18-POUNDERS. LONDON, June 23. Lord Kitchener says, in a letter to the Labour leader, Mr Ben. Tillet: "We are doing all in our power to give the troops the munitions they require. The nigh explosive 18-pound-er shell now going out is better than anything we have hitherto had." A Times correspondent at Nancy says that, after visiting various points on both sides of the St. Mihiel wedge, south-east of Verdun, he is convinced that the French need a tremendous increase of ammunition to drive home their offensive. An overwhelming force is at the present moment marking time and when supplied with ample munitions victory, as far as it is humanly ]o3silh to predict, is in their bands. An excellent impression has been produced in France by the creation of Ministry of Munitions in England, n "it is hoped the people are beginninglo understand u.C real seriousness of the struggle. The French sre re«m the war, and know what it means.
