Wrong Man Arrested.
THE MAGISTRATE'S ADVU'E. WANGANTI. last night. The police arc nut often guilty of arresting a man by mistake, but such a case has occurred in Wanganuj. ,\ man named John Earnshaw was arrested on September 14 at Wanganui and charged with forgery. I'he adjourned case came on to-day, when Detective Siddeils appeared for the police, and stated that a mistake had been made, and he had no evidence to dlfer against the accused. ' The accused appeared in person, and expressed his objections to the course that had been taken. lie had been falselv arrested and detained, and at considerable and inconvenience to his business, and he resented the stigma put upon him. lie did not blame the police in the matter, but the person who had given them the initial information without being able to substantiate it. The case was dismissed. The magfstrare remarked that if the defendant was positive that the information given against him to the police was false he should see a solicitor, and obtain redress from »h ,: instigator of the allegations.
