THE WARATAH BUOY.
DOES IT BELONG TO ILLFATED SHIP.
(Per Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, Thursday.
An inquiry made regarding the lifebuoy washed ashore at Waiuku, does not elicit anything definite as to the vessel to which it belonged. The buoy was found by children and was subsequently seen by three men, who state that it bore the letters "Warat" and traces of two other letters, which they concluded made Waratah, also something printed resembling a flag and anchor. The>buoy was heavily waterlogged and'covered with barnacles, r The children subsequently in washing off the barnacles destroyed the lettering, but presumably the outline would be traceable by microscopic examination. If the buoy belonged to the steamer, the Waratah may have been lost while she was on the Australian coast.
