' SIR JOSEPH WARD AT WINTON
OPENING THE CAMPAIGN
AN" ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION

WELLINGTON, Wednesday
Sir J. Ward opened his campaign at Winton last night. His party were welcomed by the band and there was a very large asscmblanee. The tali originally engaged proved too smali, and a larger hall, accommodating 1500 people, was used. The Mayor presided. On Sir Joseph Ward rising' to speak he was accorded three hearty cheers. After expressing his sympathy with Mr 'Massey in 'has recent bereavement, Sir J. Ward dealt at very considerable length with the administration during the past five years. He accused the Opposition of of gross misrepresentation and in many instances personal abuse. Sir J. Ward announced that he proposed to have established shortly a, new system for the payment of money orders by the Postai Office, by which that Department w o uld. send out money to houses of working men or others- by letter carriers. This system had great possibilities and would meet a real want. Regarding a daily connection between both islands, he said he had discussed the matter with Sir Jas>. Mills, and was now informed that the Union Company had given orders to build another steamer of the Maori class, but larger and faster, to take the place of the Mararoa. They would than have one of the best ferry services in tne world.
At the conclusion of his address a vote of thanks to Sir J. Ward and coiifide-nce in the Government was carried, the meeting closing with cheers for Sir Joseph.
THE CLUTHA SEAT. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Star says that Angns McDonald, clerk of the Clutha County Council will be the Ministerial candidate for that seat.
