OPIUM SMUGGLING. STEAMER STEWARD IMPRISONED (Received Sept. 26, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 26. A steamer steward has been sentenced to six months for smuggling six tins of opium. The Customs officials stated that fines failed to act as a deterrent. SERIOUS DROUGHT. (Received Septf 12.15 a.m.) BRISBANE, Sept. 26. There is a serious drought in the west and north. Bush, fires are raging. MR WADE BANQUETTED. PREPARED TO TAKE THE FIELD. (Received Sept. 26, 9.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 26. Mr Wade was banquetted by the Liberal party. The proceedings were enthusiastic Mr Wade in a strong fighting speech claimed that the Party was thoroughly united and prepared to take the field in an appeal to the country, which the situation demanded. CENSURE MOTION DISCUSSED. (Received Sept. 26, 9.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Sept. '26. The Federal Cabinet in a lengthy sitting discussed the censure motion. It is understood that the Lalx>r members will declare straiightout for preference. SMALLPOX PASSENGER DIES. (Received Sept. 26, 9.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 26. Madam Desturler, a smallpox patient by the steamer Van Linschoten, succumbed. Besides smallpox she was suffering; from a tropical disease which, was the real cause of death.
