WELLINGTON, Monday. The High 'Commissioner's cable, dated London, September 23, is as fellows (quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot).
Mutton.—The market is quiet but firm. Stocks are moderate. Canterbury (scarce-) is. quoted at 4|d ; Canterbury light weight, 3|d ;». North Island, heavy weight, 3fd>. Lamb.—The market is firm, but a large supply of Scotch and Dutch this week affects the market demand, which is falling off, but the output is coming forward, and prices are well satisfactory. Moderate .supplies are maintained. Canterbury, s|d ; other than Canterbury s|d.
Beef.—The market is quiet, but holders are firm. The market has been favorably affected by chilled beef offerinigsi being very small. New Zealand hindquarters 3§d, fores 2§d. Pork.—New Zealand pork, sd. Butter.—The market* is firm, with an upward tendency on account of moderate supply. The Irish strike also affects fcho butter market. Danish, 135/ ; Australian 125/ ; Siberian 121/.
Cheese.—The macket ds active, with good demand, and holders are firm. Canadian, 7(2/ ■;■ New Zealand cleared.
Hemp.—The market is qiuiet, but moderate business is 'being done. New Zealand, good fair, on spot, £l9 15s ; fair grade, £lB 15s ; fair current Manila, £2O ; forward shipment of New iZealand good fair, £2O, fair grade, £l9 » fine current Manila', £2O 15s. The output from Manila for the week was 25,000 hales.
Wool.—The market is quiet, and only small business is 'being done.
Wheat.—There is a poor demand, and buyers are holding 'back on account of nigh prices. New Zealand long-'berried wheat, on spot, ex granary, per quarter of 4961b, 34/6 ; short-berried, 33/0. Oats.—The market is firm owing to reduced supplies. New iZealand short (Sparrowbills) ex granary, on spot, per -quarter of 3841b, 31/9 ; Danish, per quarter of 3201b, 18/3. Beans.—The market is firm, as supplies are running short. The Home crop is small and of average quality. New Zealand beans, f.ajq*., (old crop)., 5041b, 34/6.
Peas.—The market is very quiet and nothing doing. New Zealand (Partridge), per 5041b, 39/.
Cocksfoot Seed.—There is no change to report. (The previous report was dated the 26th .August, and read as follows, viz. :—"Market quiet. It is reported that the Continental crop is medium in 'quantity and of good quality, and selling at *o/ '
