(By Telegraph—Press Association) WANGANUI, This day. Ihe sculling match for the Championship of New Zealand was rowed yesterday on the river. A light breeze followed the contestants. After going a mile Stanbury had three lengths' lead, which he held at the end of the second mile. But when nearing home Stanbury gave up and called out, "I am beaten; Webb, take your time." The official' time for the race was IBmin osecs.
Stanbury,'who admits he was fairly beaten, appeared to hold his opponent easily for two-thirds of the journey, but when the final pinch came h could not respond.
At the presentation of prizes Stanbury said lie had been beaten by a younger and cleverer man. He had been at the game 22 years, and when he had been at it for 10 or 12 years he was too well satisfied to knock olf. „
