Johnstn, P. Callaghan and J. H. Scott. A large crowd gathered at Steele Park yesterday atterno u to witness the annual boxing Day Sports, which passed off on the whole very successfully. The weather unpleasantly hot fur some hours, became overcast towards the middle of the afternoon, and a few heavy showers fell, which however, did not greatly interfere with the proceedings. In all (he principal events the Holds were more than usually satisfactory, and some exciting finishes w. re witnessed. in future years some improvement might be mide in the" cup events, A protest wis entered against one of the winners, who fell on the tape, and it was dejided to divide the piize. The programme was rather lengthy, and several of the miuor events, in which there was a panoity of entrants, were abandoned. To the officios too much praise cannot be given foi the successful conduct of the meeting The secretary, Mr T. H. Kelly, was indefatigable. and discharged the duties of his onerous office in a manner that elicited general adn:irat : on. The starter, Mr H. Johnson, got his fields away in excellent style, and the ability as a handicapper of ilr J. B. Scott the close finishes in maDy events amply testified it. These officials were assisted by a number of willing workers. The Hamilton Municipal Band was present, and discoursed a most enjoyable programme during the afternoon. The results were as follows

A very close race, Won by about a yard, a short distance separating second anl third, limn, 223-sth sees. Second heat— W. J. Foy (19yds) 1, W. Darby (10yds) 2, 0. Kenny (22yds) 3. Ten started. A good race. Time, 22 l oth sees, final—toy I, I ayue 2, ttogg 3. All qualified starters, brom a good start the field got away well together and strung out wnen rounding the home oorner. Here Foy, who was running a game race, fail, it being alleged that ha was deliberately tripped by another competitor. Won tairly easily. Time, 22 1-oth sees.

410 Yards Handicap of £2 10a, second prize 10s. C. Humphries (30yds 1, K iiangi (30yds) 2, W. Ryan (25yds) 3. Eight started. Won easily, with an exciting finish for second plaoe. Time, 51 2-sth decs.

One Mile Handicap. First prize £5, second £l. W. Wilson (20yds) 1, A. Boss (70yds) 2. Humphries got away with a good lead, which he maintained throughout toe fjCst threj laps. At the beginning of the tourth lap, Egmtoa began to look dangerous, nva Humphries. Wilson, who had been ciose CI Eginton's heels, then spurted home, aftei a close finish with the tormer. BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

GATHERING AT HIMILTON

The tournament arranged by the Hamilton Bowling Ciub was opened on the loctl rinks yesterday morning in tine weather, though two heavy showors during the afternoon delayed play considerably. Some nine rinks took part in the contest tor full riuks, and in addition a largtf number of other players were present, so that the green presented quite a lively appearance. The green, which had been carefully prepared under the supervision or Mr J. Varney (green superintendent), played very well, wnilgfc, considering that this is the first tournimoat run by the club, the arrangements were satisfactory. Afternoon tea, provided by the wives of local bowlers, was despensed by Mesdames \ arney, Badclitfe, (Jhappell, Manning, Wheeler, Atkinson and Paull, assisted by the Misses Paull. The first two rounds and part of the third were played yesterday, and to-day the fourth round and the final will be decided. At the close of the full rink games, the champion singles of Waikato, for which there are over 20 entries will be taken. The following are the teams competing, with the exception of the Hamilton rinks, the personnel of which was published on ilouday : Mt. Eden: Gill, Walker, Young, Rankin (skip).
