TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD.

From Our Own Correspondent. The adjourned meeting of the above Board was held on Monday evening last. There were present: Messrs J. B. Teaidale (Chairman), D. Bockett, S. Matthews, H. Y. Collins and M. S. Laurie.

The Chairman briefly reported on Sir John Gorst's recent visit and reception to Te Awamutu, and stated that Stf John wished him to thank the Te Awamutu 'own Board and the people in the distriot for the very kind and hospitable welcome accorded him on that occasion. Sir John stated that he had been most hospitably received in New Zealand and the apex of the kindness * had been reached in To Awamutu. In connection with the new saleyarda site the Under Secretary of the Lands Department wrote stating that in accordance with the desire of the deputation whioh recently waited on the Hon. Minister of Lands requesting that a section of land in the Teasdale Settlement (late Mission property) should be vested in the Board for saleyards, instructions had been given that seotion number 8 of this Settlement containing four acres and thirty-five perches be set aside for the purpose and vested in the Te Awamutu Town Board on payment of the price of the land. On the valuations being completed particulars will be sent of the amount plaoed on the seotion. The communication was received with much satisfaction by the Board. As soon as the land is vested steps will be at once taken to raise a loan for ths purpose of building ' up-to-date yards so that fortnightly sales can be held as well aa large special horse and cattle sales. Mr H. J. Greenslade, M.H.E., wrote statthat he had reoeived several communications re the vote of A'SOO for the new bridge over the Puniu ri rer. He suggested that the Board co-operate with those interested in order that the money may be expended before the 31st March and had no doubt that should the .£3OO voted be sufficient., the balance would be obtainable next session. The Chainnan stated that the matter was being pushed forward. He was daily expecting a reply from Mr Burd, the engine r.

The Raglan and Kawhia Town Boards wrote for information re the working of Town Boards.—The clerk was instructed to forward any information asked for from time to time.

A notification was received from the Ciabour Department re appointing the usual weekly half-holiday for the ensuing year.—The clerk was instructed to aCtend to the insertion of the usual notioes. The Chief Engineer of Roads forwarded a copy of the model by-laws.—lt was de-: cided to pass the same on to each member tor perusal.

The Chairman reported that the Hon. W. Hall-Jones would be visiting the Waikato early next month and he considered it a good opportunity to have various looal requirements brought under the notice of the Minister.—lt was dncided to invite Mr Hall-Jones to Te Awamutu. A publio welcome and banquet will be given to him and a drive round the district.

The Chairman stated that the plans and ?peoifioationa for thi Postmaster's rew iwnlling were now on view at the pr--* office. ]he dwelling, when erected, be uioat con»enient and comfortable and a credit to the township, but for some unfortunate reason the Department *iow proposed to erect it on the bottom portion of the Post Office allotment, with the front facing on to Sloane-street.—lt was unanimously decided to protest against this and to urge that the dwelling be erected on the site chosen orig.nally at the top end of the allotment faoing Walton-street. This was far more suitable, and besides was the proper place.

In connection with the urgent repairs needed to Mangahoe bridge, the Chairman stated that the County Council had the matter in view and the bridge would be be strengthened by seme additional stringers.

Messrs Laurie and Bookett reported on the contraot for the o'eaning out of the watertables, etc, whioh had been carried out to their satisfaction.

On the motion of Mr Bockett, aeoonded by Mr Collins, it was decided to tar and sand the footpath in front of the Courthouse to the T«wn Hall and also the footpath from Mr Land's shop to the bridge past St. John's Church.

The Chairman was authorised to employ a man to do the necessary work required to the footpath from the township to the railway station.

The matter it haviug a new fence erected at the hack of the Town Hall was left in Mr Bookett'a hands.

The clerk was instructed to attend to the renewal of .the Hoards accident policy covering the workmen.

Mr Matthews reported that the metalling in front of Messrs Middlebrook's and Biokit's and the ctiorete kerbing and* watertabling had been -carried out to his satißfficionand that the job was now an evprlasting one. A few accounts were passed for payment and the Board roso.
