COLLIERY LOCKOUTS.
SITUATION CLUITCAL
SYDNEY, September 9
There is every prospect of a general ' lockout in the Maitland district mines, owing to the failure of negotiations fot the abolition cf the working of the dog watch in the pila on Sunday nights.
The Kuri-kuri miners gave a fort, night's notice, which terminates at midnight to-night. This notice directly effects 275 men. but reports from* Newcastle to-night state that the owners are determined that it the men refuse to work the dog watch, they will not be allowed to enter the pits to-morrow morning. This will mean idling aoout two thousand.
SYDNEY, September 9. Mines employing three thousand' raeu and boys will be affected by a lock-out. Miners contend that the dog watch sliift is injurious to health and dangerous in operation; the mine owners, on the other hand, claim that nightwork is followed in many other industries without dangerous or injurious results. The trouble has had the effect of increasing the output of Newcastle mines where the dog watch is in operation,
