A WAIKATO SETTLER IN ENGLAND

We clip the following from the Hull Daily Mail : A striking and very practical tribute to New Zealand a* a thriving rolony was paid at the Mail Office yesterday by Mr C. <j. , Hutchinson, a typical Yorkshireman, who has come thome to Yorkshire—hale and prosperous—after a 35 years' satisfactory experience of Colonial life. Mr Hutching n left his native country early in the " seventies " with a ,£lO note in his pocket, and be has spent the most of the 35 years ho has b>en away in .New Zealand. He is enthusiastic in hiß praise of its climate, its opportunities, and its Government. He is a whole-hearted admirer of the late Prime Minister (Mr " Dick ' Seddon), and speaks eloquently of the good work Mr Seddon has done—criticism by othets not withstanding. With only .£lO in his possession when he landed at Auckland 35 years Mr Hutchinson duclares, not without some prido, that " 1 have never wanted a day's work." •' And how many acros do you own now ?" he was asked. " Eight hundred and fifty acres of freehold land, and every bit cultivated," waa the cheery reply. "I was (he continued) a pupil of the late William Goodwin, of jttovingham, near York, and I have been in England three weeks. lam staying for about three months." " And what about your family ?" " I have thirteen boys and girls, all doing well." " And you will be glad to go back?" " Oh, yes, I shall be glad to go back to New Zealand. It is one of the most prosperous of the British Colonies." Mr Hutchinson is stayiug with his two sisters at Jesmjnd, Newiand-avenue, and the story of his experiences and the information he brings home are extremely interesting.
