HAMILTON WEST SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The newly elected committee held their first meeting in Messrs Tidd and Stanton's refreshment rooms yesterday- evening. Those present were Messrs S. Knight (Chairmm), Horsnell, Tidd, Young, Going, Hardley, Grant, Mason and Burgess (lion, secretary). School Holidays.—Mr Grant brought this matter up pointing out that the summer holidays were too long and the winter holidays too short. Seven weeks wss too long a time for the children to be a-vay from school at one time. He considered the division of the holidays was too unequal.—The matter was discussed at some length, and it was finally resolved not to come tc a decision until next meeting, Mr Grant to look into the matter. Grants.—The Education Department notifi -d tho committee that the sum of X 23 lis 9d had been placed to its credit. This iucluded a special grant of £8 17s 0 1. — Received. Teaching £tafe.—The Board notified that Mr Shepherd, at his own request, had had been appointed t» the position of assistant master of the Newmarket school, and that the Board would take an early opportunity to call applications for the position and consult the Committee on the matter.—Feceived. Steps at Garden Place.—lt was resolved, on the motion of Mr Grant, that the Secretary write to the Borough Council asking them to extend the steps at Garden Place down to the bottom of the hill. Heating ok School, —Mr Horsnell said the children were complaining as to the want of fires in the schoolrooms, and after consulting the Secretiry, he had ordered fuel, but the caretaker ought to have instructions from the Committee to have the tiies lit half an before school opens. Resolved accordingly, and also to call tenders for the nece sary fuel. Physical Exebci.-e. —Mr Horsuell brought up the advisability of more physical drill being given to childien. It was resolved that a small committee consisting of the Chairman, Messrs Going and Horsnell inquire into the matter, and ascertain exactly what is required in this direction.

Accommodation.—Mr Young moved that the Education Board be requested to inquire into the present accommodation at the Hamilton High Scboo), and approach the Government for a special grant for extending same.—All the members strongly endorsed this motion, which was carried unanimously. Truant Officer. —On the motion of Mr Mason, it was decided to approach the Board as to the appointment of a resident trnant inspector. Children and the Train Service. —It was decided, on ilr Young's suggestion, to write to the Railway Department asking that a passenger car be put on to the 3.30 goods train travelling north, the 3 o'clock train south, and that the 210 f- p.m. train to Te Awamutu be delayed to 3 p.m. Technical School.—The Chairman said that he had about .£214 already promised, but no doubt more might be obtained from private sources. —Resolved that in event of the Hon. Hall-Jones coming to Hamilton

J.Greenslade and G. Edgesumbe as members of the Education Board be asked to attond. Miscellaneous. Messrs Burgess and Going were appointed visiting committee for the present month.— Resolved that the present caretaker be re-engaged.—Also that tenders be called for stationery.— Various accounts were passed for payjnent.
