SENSATIONAL TRAGEDY

—♦— MURDER AND SUICIDE. AN ACTOR SHOOTS HIS WIFE AND CUTS HIS THROAT. A PREMEDITATED ACTION. (by eleotbio TELEGRAPH.-COPYRIGHT), Sydney, November 13. Intense sensation was caused in the city owing to the murder by Arthur Dacre, the well-known actor, of his wife, Amy Roselle, followed by his own suicide. The couple were lodging in Macquariestreet, where the crime took place late last night. For some time past they had been engaged playing with Leitchs' Company at the Theatre Royal, the couple taking the leading parts in "The Land of the Moa." Thoy appeared .on Saturday night, but neither were in the best of health, ; All day yesterday they kept in their rooms, reading for the new play "The Silence of Dean Maitland." ;! Late in the evening a noise was heard in their l room, followed by a violent ringing of the bell. A housemaid answered, but could nob open the door. Eventually an entrance was effected, when Dacre was found dying, and expired soon after. Mrs Dacre was lying on the bed dressed in her night gown, as if shot in bed. Darce seems to have acted methodically throughout the dreadful tragedy. He apparently vshot. his wife and rang the bell forthe purpose,of attracting attention. He then went into the bedroom and cut his own throat. Pull light was thrown on the unfortunate man's state of mind by several letters he left addressed to Leighton, who had been playing with him throughout the season in Sydney, in which he speaks of financial troubles, and their friends ascribe the tragedy to failure of the Australian tour and monetary difficulties. The generally accepted opinion, which is borne out by the tenor ol the 1 letters, is. that it was "pre-arranged between them; ;; '• ■■ i : ': V.'''
