KIHIKIHI.
Farms and Orchards,—The many farms and orchards in this district are looking first-class. There is :in abundance of grass verywhere, which is fast increasing the snpply of uiillc to the local creamery. There is a splendid promise tor large crops of plums, peaches, apples, etc, and tin; gooseberry harvest, which is even abator , 4 one than in past seasons, has already commenced. There is a very perceptible increase in the number of blackbirds and thrushes; in fact, they are now quite plentiful, and will no doubt prove themselves a great nuisance when tho softer sorts of fruits become ripe. The comparatively recently imported bumble bee is already, I am told, acquiring very destructive habits in the gardens, notably that of biting and nipping off many flowers which .it is too big to enter in the usual way for the purposo of obtaining the honey. Sugar Bket.—ln connection with the proposed sugar beet industry, I omitted to ,mention that Mr Mackinder has under- ' .taken the canvassing for guarantees to grow the required root crops in this district. All who know Mr Mackinder and his talking and argumentative capabilities will agree with me that ho is the right man in .the right place. ' Land Improvement.-Wending my way along the Kihikihi-Waotn road, I could not help remarking the steady strides of civilisation. About two miles beyond Parawera I noticed a fine paddock of new grass on •the newly-acquired property of Messrs Short, and they are now erecting a substantial wire fence for some two miles along the road frontage. Further along is, the property of Mr Brett, on which he has erected a small cottage of kauri timber. The sland in this vicinity tiikes grass very readily. Polo Meeting.—At the meeting of the Kihikihi Polo Club, held on Saturday evening. la.st, there wasia very fair attendance, Mr J. Coiboy being voted to the .chair, ,'fhe balance-sheet for last season was submitted by the secretary and passed, and showed a substantial balance to the credit. The following new members were <• i elected :—Colonel Shepherd, and Messrs: Spe<tke, J.. Farrell,; M. S, Laurie .and J. Anderson, and several others were 'Bpoken of as intending members. Colonel Shepherd was unanimously elected President and Messrs H. Mbncrieff (re-elected), fi. Rigg and R. G. Speake Vice-Presidents. The following were chosen to act as a committee :—Colonel Shepherd, and Messrs Speake, Kay, Gordon, Corboy, and Wetherell, together with the secretary (Mr S.' Lawson). It was decided to commence play on November 23rd, at 4.30 p.m., and •let by contract, the necessary preparation of the club's ground. It : was also resolved to hold sports on New YearV Day, to be combined with athletic events, so as to make them more generally interesting to the public, the programme to be arranged at a future meeting, and to be duly advertised inTHBiWAiKATO Times. The President, addressed those present in a few wellchosen remarks as to the strength and success of the club in the past, and after the usual votes of thanks the meeting was con-cluded.-(Owa Correspondent).
