RAGLAN.
Shipping.—About ten days ago the Northern Steam Ship Company's cutter, Rose Casey, arrived here from Onehunga, having onboard a consignment of timber, etc. She is to remain in the harbour and will be engaged from time to time in taking goods, that the N.S.S. Company may bring down in their steamers, up to the various places in the. harbour, viz: Okete, Waitetuna, Hot Springs wharf, and other parts. In thus sending her down for this work, ths company have shown that they are desirous of doing all they can for the wants of those residing around the shores of the harbour, and who in the past often experienced great difficulty in getting their goods, and now that so much land has been got into grass no doubt a considerable trade will be done in the shipment of wool, sheep, etc. . During the summer months, too, visitors and others will have, the opportunity of a trip up to thn I lot Springs wharf and other parts of this beautiiul harbour, and perhaps in fine weather fishing excursions outside the bar aloag the coast to Gannet Island might be arranged if inducement offered.—On Saturday morning, July 16th, the s.s. Argyle arrived from Onehunga. She was expected earlier in the week, but was in consequence of the severe weather bar-bound at Hokianga. She brought a large number if passengers for this port, with Mr J. B. Somerset, clork of the Raglan County Council, who had returned from Auckland having gone up with her on her last trip from here, taking with him the books of the County Council to be audited by the Government Auditor (Mr Holmes), who was not able to come on to Raglan for that purpose, either from the road stoppage or other causes.—Whilst the stßii.ner was discharging her cargo, the cutter Rose oaine alongside, and the cargo of several tons for North Arm and Waitetuna settlers was taken on board from the slings and the cutter proceeded with the evening's tide up the harbour to the Waitotuna and Hot Springs wharves, Mr Sutton, agent for the company being in charge. The eteamer after disehnreini? at Te Akau proceeded southward to Wanganui. etc.
Land Sales.—The whole of the East sida of Chamberlain's block situated outside tho *own of Raglan, has now been disposed of by Mr T. B. Hill, the agent for the sale thur'j'if, thfi last three .sections liavintr lujbd si,ld to Messrs Langley and Li Timo-j. The lutter gentleman is jusfc completing the erection of a house on his lnt, and the former is about to build a dwelling house with butchery and other tmiUings upon his section. CoNTlucr. —Mr Smith, who purchased Mr Stewart's property lately, is having an orchard laid down and has let the contract for trenching the ground to Mr James LaTrobe. Messrs Gal van and Co. have just completed their contract for bus!) falling ntMrLascelles, Kauroa Valley, and are commencing this week their contract of 100 acres at Mr Smith's, AVailetunn. Road Stoppage.— During last week, Messrs Laneley and Rendnll interviewed Mr Mueller, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, upon this matter ; and wo are informed that Mr Bruce also saw that gentlnman. Uuon the arrival of the mail on Saturday information was received that all obstruction hud been removed and the road open ngain, so that "all is well that ends well." Information as to how the matter has been settled has not yet been received. Mails. —Saturday's mail was a very heavy one, besides the 'Frisco mail the papers of the previous mail had not been received on Thursday when tho mail arrived one day late in consequence of the flood a. The Weatkkb —Although we have experienced along with other parts of the district heavy rains during the la*t week or two, yet no damage was done to bridges, etc., although several of them are in anything but a sound condition and were expected to have been carried away.
