NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Newcastle Road Board was held on Wednesday, 13th July, at the office of the Board. Present : Messrs Corbny (chairman), Blackett, Corbetf, Harris and Foxall,—ln reply to Mr Moffit's application for repairs on the road by Hav«lock Hill, this being a boundary road, the clerk was directed to write to the chairman of the Ngaruawahia Town District Board and ask if they are willing to bear half the expense uf tiio necessary repairs, the work to be carried out under the supervision of Mr \V. Harris.—ln reply to the clerk of the Raglan County Council, the Board resolved-to consider the best means of temovins the obstruction from the road at Mr George Little's.—Mr McCutcheon again nnde application for a culvert on the county road near his place. The Board objected to have this matter reopened. The Chairman read the following letter sent by him to Mr McCutcheon " In reply to your letter of the 13th April, iu which you express yourself rather warmly while requesting the Road Board to repair a piece of road by your farm that required a culvert, the said road being a county road, you say you saw Mr Shepherd about it, who said to you that the work should be done through the Council and the Road Board. Mr Shepherd should not have told you so, at least till the Board was first consulted and its co-operation asked for in an official way by the Council. Tlio Board is in no way responsible for the damage dona to the culvert giving access to your farm. Some years ago the Board put a culvert on the road where you now complain of, previous to its being a county road. But now when this road ha? bean taken aver by the County Council and declared a county road, the Board's jurisdiction ceased. If, as you say, the cul vort was afterwards torn up by order of the County Council, and the approach to your farm destroyed through the removal of the culvert, surely ycur OW n sense might tell you that it is the Council that is responsible and not the Road Beard for any inconvenience you suffer through the neglect. When Mr Shepherd told vou that the Board could ha\M complied with your request, he must have known that it could only result in getting you to quarrel with | the Board.—Yours truly, (Signed) P. Con boy. " Upon this the Board resolved that the clerk forward the following resolution, passed by the Board at its last meeting r« McCutclieon's Road to the Waipa County Council: " That the Board declino to take any responsibility re the culvert at McCutcheon's,the Council having taken up a culvert that had been put in by the Board previously, which the Council never since replaced."—lt was resolved to notify that the Board, at its next ordinary meeting, intend to strike a general rate of one half-penny iu the £ on the ratable value of all the ratable property in the district for the year ending the 31st March, 1893. —It was resolved that tenders be called for cutting, carting and laying 2000 fascines on the road leading to the Pukete railway station ; also, for works oi the old Whatawhata road, which consist'
of formation, cuttings and levelling, the chairman and Mr Blackett to lay off the work.
