The anniversary soiree in connection with the Hamilton Wesleyan Church takes place on Tuesday week. It is now four years since a gathering of the members has been held in connection with this object, and the efforts being put forward by the promoters should assuredly make the soiree a success. The ladies of S. Andrew's, Cambridge, have instituted a " sewing bee" to prepare articles for tho garden fete to ba held on Boxing Day. A " bee" was held at Mrs Thorton's, at Gwynnlands, on Wednesday, when good progress was made ; the next will be on July 14th at Mrs Wells', Cambridge. A football match will be played this afternoon on Sydney Square, Hamilton, between East and Wesc boys under Hi years of age, commencing at 3 o'clock. A great deal of interest appears to be taken in the game among tkam?elve*, and each side is confident of winning. The odds are 2 to 1 on the East.

Very satisfactory prices were realised at the cleavipg sale of Mr S. N. Weattiey's farm »t<>ck, furniture. &c, conducted by Mr W. J. Hunter un Thursday last. There was a large attendance of buyers. We understand that the result of the recent visit of Mr Jackmann, Inspector of breweries, to Wniksito, will be a number of cased against some Waikato brewers for evasion of the Beer Duty Act. Messrs Hudson Williamson, Crown Prosecutor, and T. Hill, Collector [of Cnstom.s, will arrive by train to-day to prosecute. Next Thursday evening at the Public Hall, Cambridge, the Rev. 11. Scott West will deliver a lecture on " Scottish Ballads." This is the sec md of Ihe series being got up by the Presbyterians of Cambridge, and from the well known popularity of the reverend gentleman, both as pruachor and lecturer, we anticipate a most instructive and entertaining eveuing. During the hearing of the case Deegan v. Rico yesterday, at the R.M. Court, Hamilton, a lady witness for the plaintiff's side, got offended at the questions put in the cross-examination with regard to the ownership of the horse connected with the case, and refusing to answer any more questions walked out of the witness-box. It is needless to say that the witness was induced to return, and the cross-examination proceeded. Lovers of the chrysanthemum should pay Mr T. Wells of Cambridge a wsit, fur at the present time he has one of the most perfect specimens of the reflexed variety in bloom that we have witnessed. It is named " Cu!lingfordi,"and is a lovely crimson colour, the backs of the petals being golden yellow ; towards the centro of the flower S'line of these are rerlexed and show the yellow, thus adding greatly to its beauty. The reception meeting to Captain and Mrs Thomas (the newly appointed Salvation Army officers to Hamilton) was announced to take place on Thursday night, and much disappointment was expressed through their not putting in an appearance. It appears that the captain took tho la giippe just about the time he was to leave Otahuhu to proceed to Hamilton, and was therefore prevented from coming. The officers, however, are expected to arrive to-day, and the reception meeting will take place to-night. We would remind our readers in Kihikihi and the neighbourhood that (he concert in aid of the school prize fund is to take place next Friday, the 27th inst. Several character songs will be sung by the children, who have been specially prepared by Miss Tristram. Several members of the Te Awamutu Musical Society have kindly promised to assist the local talent on the occasion, so that a capital evening's amusement may be confidently expected. The concert will be followed by a dance, and refreshments will be provided.
