ENORMOUS FLOODS.

HIGHEST ON RECORD. TOWNS UNDER WATER. LOSS OF LIFE. DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. (BY ELKCTBIC TELEQBAPH.— COPYBIQHT.) Brisbane, March 27. Reports continue to come in, showing the extent of the floods. At Charters Towers the Burdekin River was 72 feet high and ten miles wide, the town being under water. A very large number of stoek were drowned, and the desolation of the country districts is simply appalling. Many miraculous escapes from death by drowning are reported, in one instance a man, his wife and six children being rescued by a passing boat, after clinging to a tree for 18 hours. Numbers of houses were swept clean off their foundations by the rush of water. Several fatalities are reported from districts affected by the Hoods. At Townsville 20 inches of rain fell in 60 hours.
