(by electric telkgraph—copyright). London, March 19. The Portuguese ; officials - protested against the hoisting of' the British flag in the Shire district, but did not oppose it by force. ; Lord Salisbury discredits the statement that Consul Buchanan has hoisted the British ensign in the Shire district. He thinks it probable that the flag has merely been, hoisted on some vessel on the river. The Lisbon Press expresses a desire that diplomatic relations with Britain should cease, and publishes attacks on the Prince of Wales. It has been discovered that the hoisting of the British flag by Consul Buchanan in : the Shire district was outside the territory which England admits as belonging to Portugal.
