THE STRIKES.
(<JY ELECTRIC! TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT). • London, March 19. Thousands of operatives in Lancashire and Yorkshire have been thrown out of work by the colliers' strike. It is feared that the supply of gas in the districts affected by the strike will fail shortly. The union of colliery owners is weak, and they are much divided in opinion. It is therefore thought that the strike will be a brief one. Many of the mills and factories ■in Lancashire, the Midlands, and Cheshire are ceasing work owing to the decreased output of coal. The Warwickshire colliers have accepted an inimedate increase of 5 per cent on the understanding that they shall receive an additional 5 per cent when conceded elsewhere. London has not been affected by the colliers' strike, plentiful supplies having been drawn from the Northern coal fields. Mr Beckett, M.P., proposes that the Board of Trade should be requested to arbitrate on the subject of the present strikes. Thirteen thousand imported labourers are employed on the Liverpool docks. The dockers who went out on strike at Liverpool are resuming work. The colliers' strike benefits the Durham and Northumberland miners, who arc taking no part in it. Latkr. The colliery owners at Lancashire and Cheshire remain obdurate, but those at I-iecester are yielding to the demands of the men. Shipping at Hull is largely affected. The strike has resulted in 30,000 mill hands being thrown out of work. Coal is being retailed in London at £:2 per ton. The Liverpool dock men are experiencing great distress.
