NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
A Maori woman, who was helplessly drunk at the time, narrowly escaped her death at Hamilton 011 Tuesday afternoon last. At about 2.30 p.m. she was riding down the road, accompanied by two other Maoris, who were also the worse for drink, and she was in such a drunken state that she fell off her horse three times within the space of about ten minutes. The third time she caught her foot in the stirrup leather, pulled the saddle round, and there hung by her leg, the horse kicking furiously within a foot of her head, and had it not been for a passer-by, who caught hold of the horse and cleared her leer, she would probably, before many minutes could have elapsed, have had her head smashed. The only thing that could be got out of her was that she wanted more brandy. She was picked up and put on the horse again, but whether she reached her destination (Whatawhata) in safety or not, we do nut know.
