THE NATIVE JUDGESHIP IN WAIKATO.

+ TO THE EDITOR. SIH,— I The Hon. the Native Minister must be congratulated on his policy of establishing in Waikato the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court. This movement will do more towards welding together the severed link of confidence between the King natives and the Government than anything else that could be thought of. Tlie very name of Waikato itself has a potent power among the native races, and the shifting of the head department for dealing with native titles to Waikato will commend itself to Tawhiao, Wahanui, and other leading natives as conciliatory. Apart from this, in dealing with the large areas of native country beyond the boundaries of the Waikato settlement, greater economy of working and the convanience of native owners and the authorities will be better conserved. Moreover, as in Chief Judge Macdonald we have a gentleman of high" qualification as a District Court Judge there is no reason why he could not act in that capacity also on occasions when time would allow of his so doing. Iu any case lam convinced that all who profess to understand the natives will agree that in fixing the Chief Native Judge in this, the most important of native districts in the colony, will prove to be a wise step, and another feather in the cap of the Native Minister.-—Yours truly, William A. Graham.
