THAMES, Friday. An impression prevails that the body of the supposed Kuiopean recently found at the Miranda is, after all, that of the niiasing native Pdiena. The description •riven at the inquest tallies with that of Parena in important particulars, and the latter's relatives are anxious that the body should be exhumed for identification.
CHRLSTCHURCH, Friday. The handsome new offices which have been erected in Cathedral Square for tho Australian Mutual Provideut Association were opened to day, and the occasion was celebrated by a luncheon, at which Sir \V. Fitzherbert presided. In the course of his speed) he refeired to the satisfactory progress of the society since it was first established in New Zealand in 1871. He condemned the Government Life Insurance for guaranteeing the absolute security of policy holders, because it meant the possibility of increasing taxation to the community. At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, to-day, the chairman reviewed the possibilities of prices likely to be obtainable for the colony's wheat crop, and concluded that their chanceb of securing better prices were doubtful. He considered, however, that reliable English authorities are unanimous in their opinion that iv the near future there will be a splendid market; in Europe for all the meat New Zealand is likely to be able to produce for many years to come.
Of the whole number of the sailing vessels of the world, Great Britain claims about one-third under the flag, North America oue-sixtn, and Norway more than one-tenth. At Wlutsbeth, England, lately, two or three oysters were put away in an earthen pan, and during the night a couple of young mice inserted their hungry mouths within the shells of one of the bivalves. In the morning the mice were found fait held by the oysters, and the whole paxty were consigned to a naturalist, who placed them in spirits, and will place them in a local museum. Mr J. X..
