TAUPO, Tuesday. About 2000 shctp from Hawke's Bay have passed hero for Morrin's station, Waikato.
PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. Mr MacArthur, M.H.R., addrcaied his constituents last night, and received a uuanimous vote of confidence.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At Mr Gtoxei's temperance lecture tonight it was announced that if the temperance candidates were returned for the licensing election two or three publichouses would be closed in each ward.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuetday. At half-past two this morning a cot* tage belonging to R. Harris, at Sydenliam, was burned down. The house was insured for £175 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office, and the furaitaro for £100 in the National.
TIMARU, Tnesday.~ Cardinal Morau and suite armed here to-day, and were met at the railway station by about 500 people. The)' leave for Christchurch to-morrow.
DUKEDIN, Tuesday. In view of the early election cooteits the Bible-inSchools Association is beginning an agitation in favour of Bible read* ing. The Resist) *" heard counsel in support of a petition by G. W. Elliott to have Colemau Burke declared a bankrupt. There is an equity suit which has been before the Court for two years, brought by Burke against Elliott, and it yra* attempted to show a petition had been tiled to quash the suit. Elliott, in his evidence, characterised the equity suit as a conspiracy between Burke and a lawyer. Judgment was reserved. Air J. Gore, M.H.R. for Dunedin South, gives an unqualified support to the Ministry, and has declared for modified protection. He received * unani* mous vote of confidence.
Wednesday^ The Registrar today adjudicated Coleman Burke, a bankrupt and declined to proceed further with taking accounts in the equity suit. The Westport Coal Company's meeting was rather lively. Mr G. Joachin was in the chair and moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, to which an amendment proposed that the meeting adjourn on the ground that the report and balance-sheet did not discloses the true state of affairs. Mr Pope, who> represented several Adelaide shareholders, asked the Chairman several questions, which the Chairman refused to answer. In answer to other questions he said the cost of coal alongside the ship was 10s 9d, and the selling price 10s lid. The report was eventually adopted. The Premier .and Mr Ballance will probably leave for Wellington on Monday, while Mr Laroach will visit the Maerewhenua gold field. Mr Ballanoe speaks at Lawrence to-morrow.
INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. The Acclimatisation Society are making arrangements to receive a share of the salmon ova now on the way to the colony in the lone.
