CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday.
Joseph Henry Greene, gunsmith, was found in <i shop in Colombo street on ■Saturday afternoon with two bullet wounds in his head, and a revolver by his side. He never spoke, and died the same night. It is supposed he shot himself, and that the ball passed through his head, making two wounds. He had been dunking duiin<£ the past month. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce and other local bodies waited on the Premier tins afternoon in reference to the 1 ail way tariff. Nothing new was said on cither side, and the Premier said the Government could not make any alteiations m the rates A deputation of Kaiapoi, Rangiora, and Woodend elcctois waited on the Hon: E. Richardson to-day -with a lequisition bearing 340 signatmes, asking him to stand for Kaiapoi. He consented, and the deputation promised to secure his retain. Monday. The hon. Mr Tancred died to-day. He an lved in the colony in IS3I. lie was three times in the Cabinet. The hon. Mr Rolleston goes North to-monow morning. Mr Saundets has retired from his candidature at Kaiapoi. Judge Johnston delivered a highly laudatory address in refeience to John Henry Taucred this morning in the Supreme Court. The Governors of the Canterbury College passed a resolution of a similar character.
