A correspondent writes from Pukete on June 2nd :—": — " To decide whether the county should or should not borrow £22.'), and execute, &c," according to advertisement, a poll was to have been taken at this place, but, although every preparation was made, no official turned up to meet the free anil independents who imu>tcted to declare their opinions with legard to the aforesaid borrowing. It was evident that " someone had blundered," as neither the county, the riding, or the road board oHicei'3 had communicated with the retaining officer, directing him to hold the poll which, according to act, is required. Of course, there was a good deal of grumbling, as to the place, although strictly speaking it is within the ■ riding, but, at the s.ime time, within a few chains of being out of it. Some of the fice and independents expressed their feelings very strongly on the matter. •Some said the act should be hung up, others that the county council should be hung up, otheis that the road boaids, acts and all should be buried. One thing they seemed unanimous about was the vexation that they should be brought to this corner of the riding on their busiest day for no purpose, through the neglect, wilful, or otherwise of some chairman of council or road board, who {should have given instructions to the returning officer to hold the poll under the "Roads and Biidges Construction Act, section 49 &C.
