RAGLAN.

Thk annual meeting of the ratepayers of the Karioi district was held on July 9th, in the Te Mata school-room. The chair was occupied by Mr \V. Duncan, J.P. Tlie annual report and financial statement were read ; the latter showed that the yearly receipts amounted to £81 12s 7d, and the expenditure to £Sl 5s 9d, leaving a balance in h.ind of 6s lOd. This, however, is merely the statement for the year. The Board is still in debt to the tune of £22 or so. Tho reports were adopted with very little discussion. The following gentlemen were elected trustees for the ensuing year :—Messsrsßridgman,: — MesssrsBridgman, Duncan, Liddell, Phillips, and Thomson, Messrs 0. Grilmour and J. W. Ellis were appointed auditors, and Messrs Loyran and J. Mitchell, fence viewers. The storms which usually burst fortli at these annual meetings were absent from this one. Everybody appeared to be in a good temper, and the business was done quietly. The annual meeting of the Rnglan ratepayers was held at Raglan on July 1 6th. The financial statement showed a balance in hand of £6. The following gentlemen were elected trustees : — Messrs T. Mitchell, (Chairman), W. Powell, Mita Karaka, Allan Gilmour, and J. Charlton. Messrs Frizelle and McGillivray were appointed auditors, and Messrs C. Gilmour and Philps, fence viewers. At the meeting of the newly elected Board, it was resolved to make representations to .Mr Whitaker, M.H.R., concerning the erection of a bridge over the Opouturu Creek. This is the tidal creek running between the Raglan townships and Karioi. A bridge there is much wanted, and would be a great commodity to the Karioi settlers. The current in the oreek is very rapid, and in bad weather crossing is not unfrequently a difficult matter. It was also resolved that the Road Board rate for the ensuing year be 9d in the £. We have had a visit from Mr J. H. Buchanan of Auckland, who came to inspect the limestone, on behalf of several local gentlemen, who intend forming themselves into a company, to properly manage this branch of commerce. At , present it is' difficult to find a market for the stone, and I am told several shipments lie oil , the , wharf at , Qnehunga, waiting for buyers. It is' thought, how, ever, that if it is properly dressed before being shipped, and advertised; the .stone may be made to , pay. ( „Ip my letter of July ,11th, I, notice a suial,! error. The " personal bitterness, or, unfitness/j' shpa'ld be \ pers, opal fitness or linfitness.— [OwnOorrea^ sohdent, July' 18.]
