TE ARO HA. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Vkby poor, very dull, and very hopeless is tho appearance of a gold mmmg 1 locality after the ftr.st rush has given place to the inevitable despondency and desertion that succeed. Of the 600 or 1000 men who were here six months ago, there would not be found 30 now. A little real work when the right time comes will do more good than all the sham energy of the goldfield. But the gold is by no means "played out," and, in fact, has never been properly touched yet, though it is known to be in existence in the locality. A chance find will some day reveal the right source, and all of a sudden it "will be found that someone in two or three places was within two or three inches of success when he knocked off, and 900 or 1000 ounces will roll in all at once as at W.iitekauri now, and Waihi, and at the Thames, after years of collapse and waiting, like Mr Micawber, for something to turn up. In reference to a statement of a member of the Waitoa Road Board, to which I alluded in a former letter, as to the non-appearance of a promised contribution towards the payment of the cost of a bridge over Johnson's creek, it should be said in justice to both sides that about £6 has been really collected by Mr J. Wood of this place, and that the amount is fully subscribed by the settlers, the payment not being disowned, but merely deferred. The Court has been sitting since my last. There are no police cases, and no applications to the Warden worth mentioning. — (July 22).
