First Day. The Summer Meeting, under the auspices of the Cambridge Jockey Club, commenced yesterday, on the course, Gwynnelauds (Mr Fanthams). From an early hour in the morning the township was thronged with the patrons of the turf, and anxious speculations were indulged in regvuding the weather. The appearance of the sky was indeed anything but reassuring. The event proved that the prognostications of the doleful ones were correct, rain commencing to fall just as the bell rang for the first race. Notwithstanding this, however, a very large number of people (probably 700) put in an appearauce — the Grand Stand, as may be imagined, being well patronised. The usual sprinkling of the members of the ring could be observed, buc the business done was not of a gigantic chaiacter. Several enterprising gentlemen were on the course with the familiar paraphernalia connected with games of chance, but, with tho exception of one gentleman whose fioughtfulness had suggested a tent, they did little or nothing, owing to the rain. The Grand Stand and terapeiance booths were most efficiently conducted by host Faynes, of tho National Hotel, the _ refreshments being of the very best quality, and dispensed with more than the usual attention and civility found at such places. The Cambridge and Waikato Reed Band, under the conductorship of Mr C. D. Mackintosh, was in attend mcc, and made the time, dreary enough otherwise under the influence of the rain, pass cheerily enough. Unfortunately, beveral members of the Bind were away, but the music was nevertheless of excellent quality. The management of the proceedings was most ably carried out by the indefatigable secretary, Mr Scott, assisted moat heartily by the stewards and other officers of the Club. The quality of the racing was really excellent, and the Club has every reason to be proud of the results of the meeting so far. Below we give a somewhat detailed account of the running : —
HAXDICAI? HTJKDLK BACE Of 40sovs.; two miles; over eight flights of hurdles, 3ft.. Gin. high. Jlr Rutherford's eh q Sportsman, aged, 9st 7lbs 1 Mr Gallagher's br q H.irry Mount, aged, lOst 2 Mr J. Gallaghers eh q Te Whetu, list. 4lbs. also ran. Lone Hand and Venus were scratched. Betting ; Harry Mount against the field. A very good start was ettected, Te Whetu giving off with the lead, closely followed by Sportsman who soon collared him at the third hurdle, Te Whetu touched knocking the timber down and Harry Mount followed through the gap. Thence ensued a close contest, Harry Mount coming to the front and the back of the course the second round, Te Whetu third. Coming up the straight however, the Te Awamutu hoise put on a spurt and came up with the leader and the two were pressed forward under the whip ; going through the gap in the third hurdle together, Sportsman however, won by about a length, amid the enthusiastic plaudits of the onlookers. The race was lull of interest from start to finish.
Of 30bovs., It miles, for horses that have never won 'in advertised race exceeding lOsovs. Mr McGee's b m Across the Grass, 4yrs, Bst Ulbs 1 Mr X Mitchel&on's b t Prenella, 3yrs 7st lllbs 2 Mr Lennard's eh q Rifleman Bst, also ran. Vortex was scratched. The betting was sbghtiy in favor of Rifleman. The hordes were got away well together, Across the Gra^s in front with Rifleman second, Prunella a dozen yards behind. This order was maintained all round, Rifleman only challenging the tnarc when about half-a-mile fiom home. Turning the corner into the straight, Rifleman clipped and fell, throwing his rider, Clark, heavily to the ground, leaving the jace to Across the Grass, with Prunella a very bad second. At first it was supposed Rifleman's jockey was seriously hurt, but happily no damage was done. Caaibmdge Cup. i Of lOOsovs two miles. Mr Horsf all's br h King Quail, dyis, 7st, 1 Mr J. Hunt's br q Yatapa, aged, 6st 9lbs, 2 Mr B. Coylo's gr q Lone hand aged, 7st, 12lbs 3 Mr A. McDonalds br q Foul Play 9-t 121bs 0 Vampire, and Gilder oy were scratched. Befctinjr : Even money on Foul Play ; 3 to 2 agst King Quail ; 5 to 2 Lone hand; 4to 1 Yafcapa. This race as might have been expected, considering the high quality of the competing hor>es, was the event ot the day. Whan stripped all the horses appeared to be in grand condition, Yatapa being the only one about which any doubts were entertained. It was felt that the soft nature of the course would tell against the Auckland Cap winner with his 9at lllbs and such indeed proved to be the case. After one false start, the starters sent the field away in tolerable order, Foul Play and Tatapa having the advantage, followed by Lone Hand with Quail last. For the first half mile the two first-named ran together, Yatapa making the running. Passing the Stand the first time Yatapa led, followed by Quail, Lone L-.nd and Foul Play in the order named. At the back of the course the same order being maintained, Yatapa seemed to have it all his own way, and loud cries of "Yatapa, Yatapa" proceeded from the Stand. His backers were, however, doomed to disappointment, for Quail coming to the front in the straight, won by a neck. The race was splendidly ridden throughout, and despite the rain, was clearly seen by all from start to finish. The discomfort of those who attended the meeting was amply compensated for by the excellence of this event. FLYING STAKES Of 2030v5. ', three-quarters of a mile ; weight for age. Mr J. Lennard's b h Batcatcher, 6yrs. 9st 1 Mr A. McDonalds b q Paramena, 4yrs, 93t 2 Mr Brind les Sunbeam also ran . Voi Lex was scratched. There was very little interest in this race. The horses all got away in the order given above, and never changed position, Ratcatcher winning somewhat .easily. MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE Of 2080V5., once round the Steeplechase course, about 1£ miles. For horses that have never won an advertised Steeplechase of lOsbvs. Mr WetherilTa b q Baric aged, 12sfc < , lib ... . ..., :.. I ,Mr, Lennard's oh m Venus 6yr3,'J2sfc • lib ,: ..>', ....- >. u , ...'.. j.;. 2 Mr Rutherford Tommy Dodd, 12st 'w> ..: ; ... .1. 3
Loafer, Clover, Tommy, and Tempc-t also started, Gladstone, Zenolria and Harry Mount being pcratohed. This was a very interesting lace. All got away well together, but Tempest and Tommy collared at the first jump. Thenc° the race -was very exciting', several balking at the fences at the road. Eventually B.iric and Tempest got to the front, but the latter ridden by E. Pilling fell, blightly injuring his rider, and the race was thpn won easily by Daric. Venus second, and Tommy Dodd a bad third.
