THE PROPOSED NEW CHURCH AT CAMBRIDGE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The remarks made at the Church meeting, re the Building Fund, by Mr Robert Fergusson, on Monday last, must strike every well-wisher to the Church aa most suitable, and, in the present condition of the funds, appropriate. I take it that the chief object is to extend the accommodation, now wretchedly inadequate for our present wants, and also provide sufficient room for the future. The rapid progress of this district and the presumed increa-<e of the Anglican Church worshippers will soon make even the limits of the proposed new building insufficient. With regard to the erection of a wooden tower, at a cost of some four hundred pounds, would it not be fi.r better to devote this sum of money to the increasing of the accommodation and comfort in the Church itself ? If a wooden tower were built, no matter how strong, it must eventually have to give place to a stone one — that is, if the much-desired peal of bells is to be added. I believd the money for a stone tower is already promised. Why not wait then for that, and let every penny which can be raised now be spent entirely on the main building. I think if the matter were clearly explained to the present subscribers of the Churoh Building Fund, their common sense would soon setie the question by selecting the useful requirements, instead of the questionable " spiral architecture" proposed. — I am, &c, A Chttechman.
