(FROM OCR COBBESPONDENT.) % The new year was ushered m at Hamilton by the Waikata Rifle Volunteer Band, who paraded the streets from 10 p.m. till nearly ono on new year's morning, and played a number of pieces m first-class stylo, and, I exa of opinion that many an oldor -place m the colony migbt wt-ll be proud

There were nine entries for this race, which was won by a man named^Apeha, Alatine a good second. The remainder were weir together. Second : Boys' race under 12 years, 100 yards ; prize, 10s. There were 'several entries for this race, which was pluckily won by a little fellow named TVa<NK-k by two yards, tho rest struggling. Third: Old men's race, over 45 rears, 100 yards ; prize, 153. Three entered for this race, wou by Slater, who hoaded tho second by four yards ; the third found his logs would not carry him the distance at tiie pace. Fourth : Running long jump ; prize, 15s. Three entered, but one very soon dropped | "Ul, luaving Djoley and a Maori to docido it, which took a considerable time, as the Maori jumped well, but the prize fell to Dooley for a jump of 16 feot 3 inches, the uiaori losing I by 2 iiic-hea. Fifth: Three-legged race, 100 yavcU ; prize, £1. j Four entered, tho winners being Pnuru and Hone. Hinton and Tristram very good second. One pair came to grief and t.he other two nowhere. Sixth : Mile handicap raco ; prize, ,C1 10s. Marshall, R;thero, Apoha, Wetini, and Tcramana, m*: scratch, llorsccroft and Harp; 20 yards. This race was won by Teramana, who ran well from start to finish, coming m fifty yards ahead of Harp, who was second ; tho rest had caved m at various distances on the run home. Seventh : "VVlieol barrow raw, (blindford) j prizo, 10s. There were five entries for this race, which caused considerable amusement from the erratic movements of some of the barrow-runners who met with a spill or two, bat were up and ofF again. Thi3 race was run twice, and won by Lees, Shanaghan, who was a good second, overshooting tho mark, lost it. Eighth : Hop, stop, and jump, prize iOs. Three entered, but it was a gift to "Webb. Nine : Sack race, 100 yards, prize 10s. Four competitors were tied up m their faeks, and made frantic efforts to reach the goal, which fir led by three of them lying m a heap a few yards from it. k Two of them managed to scramble up again, and made a rush for it, falling together again on the tape. The prize ws adivided between Webb and Hone. Tenth. Wa'iine Miori race, 200 yards : Ist prize, 7s 6d, secon 1, 2s Gd. Four ntered, and ran well, the first falling to a spare old girl caVi d Tui.e, and the second to another old dame named M-uig-i, the younger and stouter ones nowhere. Eleventh. Boys' sack nice, 100 ; Ist prize 6s, second 2s 6d. The winner of the first prize was young Dent, who went along with a sort of soe-saw motion ; the second fell to young Martin ; remainder from 75 yards to goal. Twelfth. Boys' race under 14 years, 200 yards : Ist prizo ss, second 2s 6d, third Is. Twelve stood at the scratch eager for the flag to fall, making several false starts, but at they got away well together at high pressure. W. Hyde, runs well, wou the first prize by four yards ; T.Hackott second. There was a dispute between J. Audlem and D. Melntyro for third, which they agreed to rnn over again, and Audlem secured it. This completed tho sports for the day, and folks retired fully determined to have a better programme next year, and let ie be more widely known through the medium of our paper.
