In the absence of any lioraoW races on the programme, there w ere not so many mustered: as on previous occasions. The weather wa3 the very thing that could be desired, not being so unpleasantly warm. The sports were carried out under the management of the following gentlemen, who fulfilled their various duties most satisfactorily :: — Judge, Sab^taa^ctor J. Newell, A.C. ; stewards, Messrs A. I Tho milo ynce was won by a white lad 1 -whose right name ■ is, I avn informed', Daniel HardcastJe. He was brought by M the natives up the Wa\kato when quite a child and has re- fl mained with them ever since, an,d has quite forgotten Ilia own language. A half-ca-Jte residing at Kopua, name*^|H Hughes, was supposed to liava had the race for a cerfcainty.^J as he has always won fcho mile races both here and at tho i other settlements for some years back. The "Pakeha" i however, astonished ns all by winning easily. It was the ! opinion of all on the ground that this lad, m projjer hands, would beat any runner m the country. I shouldTjave said he received 25 yards start. After the race was decided, ( Hughes offered to back himself against the lad for £3, both to'start from the scratch. He was taken up, and after an interval they ran again. The white boy again ran m a most astonishing manner, talking away most unconcernedly while , Hughes was very much exhausted. Just before coming to k tho winning-post, however, down went the boy and m came J Hughes the winner. It was the most palpable sell ! I ever saw on a race-course, — tho thing was so plain that the sta^?^B holder was coinpellod, by public opinion, to refuse giving tn^^| stakes, Hughes receiving his own money back only. Ho threatens law, but I think he had better leave it alone. In tho evening our ball concluded the amusemoatSj&S there were about 40 couples present. The Hamilton I^SJHuntcer Band was m attendance as well as on the race-groond during tho day. ...
