"OMNE SOLUM FORTI PATRIA." THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1872.

It will ho Been by an announcement in another column that u concert will take placc at Alexandra on the 26th instant. We predict a successful entertainment, as in addition to. the purely local talent, those resident in the other settlements gifted with the power to please by discoursing sweet melody have volunteered their serviced. Unfortunately entertainirientH of this description are very few and. far between in this district. We congratulate- the- settlers an the arrival of the Rev Mr Stewart and his lady. They were passengers yesterday by coach. On behalf of the residents of all denominations, we cordially welcome them to the district. In the rev getlcinan, we have a man who is liberal minded, earnest and true to the cause of Christianity, and we feel confident that his wife will exercise a beneficial inilucuce. As a rule, the eilected by a pure and educated woman is neither understood nor appreciated at its proper value; this irises, to a groat- extent, no doubt, from the lact that a really good woman is unobtrusive, and never allows '• Her left hand to know the good she has done with the right." In our advertisement columns, the Alexandra Cricket Club nnnounco their annual general meeting, which is to take placc on the 3rd October next. This club is in a very satisfactory pecuniary position, for besides the paraphernalia necessary to enable them to make a respectable demonstration ou the field, they liave a good amount to. their credit at their bankers. The example set Waikato by the Alexandra folk is worthy of imitation. Why should we not have a cricket club in each town, in order that we might challenge our fellow settlers to. a freindly game, and once a year hold a cricket jubilee. This would break the tedium of the young settler's life, and incite them to greater acquirements in this noble game, and in addition create a friendliness between the settlements -which is greatly to be desired. Our Alexandra friends are- very anxious tliat other clubs should be started in order to dissipate that want of interest which, has been tlie cause of paucity of attendance at their practices. We wish them God-speed, and may they obtain what they desire. We are very glad to learn that Mr. Johnson, at present steward of the p. s. Wuipa, purposes entering into business as fishmonger. He will reside at the Heads and. send tho- fish up the river by each steamer to agents at each of the centres of population. We wish Mr. Johnson every success. He has undertaken to supply a want long felt and should receive the support from the- inhabitants of the W aikato his energy and enterprise en Lilies him to* We commend the following, from Pub'ic Opinion to the attention af parents, as the information it contains may prove useful in case- of match poisoning : —• Antidote to Phosphorus -. MM. Eulanberg and Yohl have demonstrated that phosphorus is absorbed by carbon, and to such an extent that, taken in the- form of pills, carbon constitutes a complete antidote to the poison, and relieves those who have to manipulate phosphorus from all the disastrous consequences hitherto accruing. It has been found that the results of these pills in match faetories are better than those obtained by the use of the essence of terebenthine, as the continual use of the latter produces violent head-aches.

We hare received files of the youngest represen-tative-of public opinion, "The Bay of Plenty Times." The opinions expressed in- its columns very nearly coincide with our own, more particularly with regard to native aifairs. The writing is certainly up. to, if not above- the standard of that which is usually found iu the columns of the New Zealand press. The establishment- of country newspapers is certain to have a beneficial effect- on the district in which they circulate, provided they are honestly and respectably conducted", the newspaper up to the present time has tultilled tnese conditions. We wish our young contemporary every success, and trust that his life will be long and ever prosperous. A writer in the Australasian says "I think the phormiu 111 tenax may have a greater value than is indicated in your last week's paper. In my experiments on the extraction of tats and oils—a resume of which was given by Mr Newberry at the last meeting of the Royal Society—l found a sample of pliormium seed contained 16.71 per cent, of oil— sufficient to make it worth more than a passing thought ontrbe subject, if the growth of the seed ! does not interfere with the production of fibre, and I the produce of seed is sufficient to make it worth gathering* The time has arrived when Australia should produce vegetable oils instead of importing them. 1 shall feci obliged if you, or some of yoiu correspondents, can state the extent to which oleaginous sreds and fruits- are cultivated in the colonies, aud the produce pet ?cre, more particularly of flax, rape, colza, cotton, sun-fLower, castor, J and poppy seed, also earth or pea-nut, olive and j almonds. Australia is able to produce all these oils, | and ought to be independent of imports."
