A man named Humphries has attempted suicide by severing om of the arteries of his arm, while under the influence of drink. Arrived— Strathnaver from Auckland. Grevillo furnishes the following to the Star: —The report that Mr Mackay will be the Native Minister is untrue. —John Kreshner attempted suicide by cutting his throat. He is recovering.—A Wellington Trust and Loan Investment Company, limited, is being formed, with a capital of £100,000 in shares of £10 each. —A man named Robert Shaw has been charged with committing a rape upon Elizabeth Gregory, at Waipawa, in August last. —The Flirtsailed last night from Timaru for Auckland. PARLIAMENTARY N EWS. Wellington, Tuesday, 8 p in. There' was a large and cordial meeting of the Opposition to-day. Mr Fox has intimated his intention not to take office in auy future Ministry, but will continue to lead the Opposition until it is deemed desirable to nominate his successor. He will work earnestly as a private member in suppoiting the great policy instituted by the lato Ministry. Mr Vogel is looked to as the future leader. In reply to a question put by Mr Reynolds, the Ministry stated that it was not their intention to act on the power to prevent private people from competing with the Government in the purchase oi native lands. If they found the notices already issued restraining such competition were injudicious they would recall them, Nearly the whole afternoon was spent in committee on the Stamp Act Amendment Act. After considerable debate the stamp duty on cheques was reduced to one penny. Clauses 20 and 21, exemption of cheques and receipts of friendly societies, were struck out by voices on the first, and the chairman's casting vote in division on the latter clause, Mr Steward's amendment to exempt Muni, cipal and Road Board receipts was rejected by 2S to 12. Mr Macandrew has withdrawn his insular separation resolution.
