BOWLING

OPENING OF APARIMA R.S.A. CLUB.

On Labour Day the Aparima R.S.A. Bowling Club commenced its 1939-40 season. There was a good attendance of. bowlers, visitors being present from Invercargill, Otautau, Tuatapere, Te Rangi, North End, Waihopai, Bluff and the Riverton Clubs. Mr W. S. Hunter invited the Mayor (Dr N. G. Trotter) to start the season.

Dr Trotter said the green was opened »in 1914 and had been identified with the Returned Soldiers. This 25th anniversary of the Club saw us at war again and we mus£ not let mental anxiety interfere with our work and our games. The green had previously been a wilderness, now it was a beautiful, sheltered green. Though there was possibly a rivalry and friendly jealousy with the other Club across the river, let it be a friendly jealousy, because it was a "pitiable thing when fairness did not come into games. He was interested in the attitudinising of bowlers, he presumed it was part of the game, like the stance in golf. He was intrigued with their antics, but he had noticed the elegance of the ladies who took part in these games. It allowed them to get away from the kitchens and compete with the men. He wished them a successful season.

Mrs H. E. Philp sent up the first wood of the season, and the green was declared open. A Subsequent play resulted as follows: —

Mrs Young, Mr Conolly, Mr Denton and Mr H. E. Philp (s) 26 defeated Mr Odell, Mrs Eade, Mrs Cassels and ./. Clark (s) 15. Mrs Hogg, Mr Rillistou, J.
