GERMAN SPORT LEADER,
FRIENDLY WORDS AT LONDON
Herr Adolph Hulmlein, friend of Hitler since the earliest Nazi days, now leader of German motor sport, arrived in London recently with his wife ami' daughter. Surrounded by aides-de-camp, secre taries, interpreters, he gave a 'Daily Express' motoring reporter this peace message: "Tell the British public that peace has brought me here. My visit is ai gesture of peace, and proof of it. "I come from a country that wants to be friendly with England. We do not want war; you do not want war. We can do better by talking across the table. "I believe our two peoples will have peace fo? a long time." Germany's motoring boss has brought his family to see the Donnington Grand Prix race. They are almost bound to see a. German victory. The six German cars are the fastest in the Tace. "Pity the British do not build cars to compete with us," he said. "We want competition; we welcome it." "FOR PRESTIGE." The reporter explained to Herr Hulmlein that motor racing was not a State-subsidised affair here, and that a single carmaker could not afford to i spend £50,000 or more a year on building half a dozen Grand Prix formula hears.-
"But it is worth it for national prestige," said the sports leader. Later Hen- Huhnlein went t 0 trie Motor Show. His guide was ( Harold Clutterbuck, head of the technical department of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Germany's No. 1 motorist was a long tifne studying the practical small family cars on the British stands. "You may not have fast racing cars," he said, "but the English have good cars for the man in the street."
