RIVERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council held last evening was attendee! by Ihis Worship the Mayor (Dr Trotter) and Crs J. A. Martin, Jno Crawtorc.. H. E. Philp, J. A. B. Walker, T. Dyke and A. T, Hogg. —Correspondence. G. E. Beer and Sons applied for build-; ing permit for Catholic presbytery and, also for addition to building on behalf of D M. Tweedie. —Granted. Chief Postmaster, Invercargill, wrote', re lease of old post post office building. Thi s would be granted at a peppercorn| rental until such time as the Govern-i ment required it. The offer of £4 pep annum for band room and Mrs Hose 3s) per week was accepted. The Town Clerk, Invercargill Borough,; wrote giving particulars of road spraying in Kelvin Street, Invercargill. The question of oil spraying the road fronting the hospital was discussed, and it was) decided to ask Mr Pearce.to visit KivJ erton and confer with the Council, with regard to spraying with liquid bituJ men. I

The Clerk reported that he had made representation to th e Unemployment Board in regard to employing men in) making footpaths. H,e had been inform., ed that local bodies wer© employing men on a fifty per cent, basis on standard wages. It was decided to proceed with the work when permission had been obtained from the Unemployment Board The Clerk, Wallace County Council, wrote stating that the matter of widen ing the road at the Riverton cemetery was left to Crs Linscott and Hopcroft to deal with. The Clerk reported that these gentlemen had inspected, and the work would be carried out. Th© question of leasing a section in Havelock street, formerly occupied by the Rev N, Luker, was left to the Clerk to deal with. Th© Main Highways Board forwarded circular re amended rates of wages payable by the Public Works Department to its employees.—Received. Sir Clutha Mackenzie wrote thanking the Mayor for his kindness and hospitality to the members of the Blind Institute Band during their visit to Riverton. The Borough Inspector reported that the matter of marking off parking places had been attended to. It would be advisable to have only one side of the street marked off in the meantime.

The bitumen in Palmerston street had been repaired, also the footpath on Bay road. f'r Dyke said that in company with Cr Hogg he had made an inspection of Milton street. Mr Erew was prepared to form the road for a distance of eight chains under certain conditions.—Left to Clerk to enquire into. f'r Dyke said he had visited- the road at Taramea Bay. Although the work was a necessary one, there were other portions of the Borough which required more attention Or Walker said the unemployed could be utilised for making a footpath and

cutting the noxious weeds It was decided that Crs Walker, Dyke and the Mayor visit the locality and report at next meeting Cr Crawford asked whether the Conn, oil had the power to legalise a one-way road in Towack street. Or Walker paid there was only a small portion fronting Mr Robertson’s and Mr Hunter’s properties that wag too narrow. Th e other portion of the road could be widened to allow of two-wav traffic. The matter was left to the Clerk to find out the legal position in regard to this road. It was decided to emp’ov extra men for cleaning up the Borough for Christmas-
